Day 1 - July 16
The Criterium Welcomes The Rock Run
The Rock Criterium has quickly become an annual summer festival in the historic village of Mount Morris. In 2015 we hosted racers from all over New York State as well as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, Canada, France, and Guatemala. With 50 more entries than in 2014, the growth of the race brought some exceptional talent in all fields which was capped by impressive wins from Chris Schryver in the Women’s Elite Race and Brendan Housler in the Men’s Elite Race.
After seeing a substantial increase in numbers in the women’s fields, this year we are excited to offer a Women’s Cat 4 field that will NOT be combined with any other fields for the day with the hopes of further supporting women in criterium racing.
That means Cat 4 ladies get the course all to themselves for their 30 mins of racing!
As an additional show of support for beginners to the sport, we are offering reduced entry fees of $25 to Women’s Cat 4 riders and Men’s Cat 5 riders as well as $5 entry fees to all junior riders. This reductions come in conjunction with our $10 second race entry fees that we offer to riders of all categories.
We are also excited to add more athletes to the event as we introduce The Rock Run. Held just before the Men’s Elite Race, the Rock Run will be a 2 lap running race around the crit course (2 miles total) where athletes will be cheered on by hundreds of spectators and cyclists. To help welcome our runners to the event, we are offering $250 in prize money to be split between the top male and female finishers as well as event socks to all who are part of our first 150 total athletes to sign up for the races.
Day 2 - The Fondo
This Ride Is No Joke
After a year one that featured huge challenges and great rewards, we are bringing back the grand daddy of all fondo courses while continuing to expand the event to allow riders of all ages and abilities to participate.
In 2015 our Gran Fondo course of 103 miles and more than 8,000 feet of climbing proved to be harder than even the most elite riders had anticipated. With sweltering temperatures in the 90s, and many riders having raced the day before, this course showed no mercy. Of the riders who embarked on the 103-mile journey, only 70 percent finished and of those finishers only a handful could say they completed the course without walking.
But don’t take our word for it. Check out what Brendan Housler, winner of the Men’s Elite Crit and one of the top amateurs racers in the country, had to say at the top of Mead Hill.
In addition to brining back the same hellacious course, we are offering two start times this year for the Gran Fondo - an early wave and a late wave. As a way to help more riders finish more closely together, and funnel everyone through our dinner hours better, we will have an early wave starting at 6 a.m. for riders who anticipate a finish longer than 7.5 hours, and a late wave starting at 8 a.m. for riders who anticipate a finish in less than 7.5 hours.
Although we will not force riders to choose one field over the other, riders who do not match their finish times with the appropriate wave may finish too early or too late for our dinner, which will run from 1 - 4 p.m.
Not crazy enough for that kind of torture. Don’t worry, most aren’t and that’s why we offer three more ride options. With a Medio Fondo of 56 miles and a Piccolo Fondo of 30 miles, riders of all abilities can enjoy challenging courses that feature Letchworth State Park and a fully supported ride with all the same prizes and perks as the Gran Fondo distance, including event t-shirt, post ride meal, and door prizes.
Additionally, this year we are also offering a Family Fundo Greenway Ride. This 6-mile, out-and-back course on the Greenway trail will keep riders safely out of traffic (except when cross intersections) and on open and well-maintained trail. For just $15 per family, the course will have one rest stop at the turnaround point and be completely kid friendly. Meal tickets and t-shirts are NOT included in this entry fee, but can be purchased on event day or through online registration.
From elite to beginner criterium racers, to runners of all abilities, to cyclists looking for the greatest fondo challenge of their lives, to families looking for a fun, supported bike ride, The Rock Criterium and Gran Fondo truly offers something for everyone.
Mark you calendars for July 16 and 17 and we will see you in Mount Morris, NY!
