The Rock Gran Fondo, sponsored by American Rock Salt, offers riders of all abilities and the chance to tour the scenic roads of Livingston County on a fully-supported, timed event with rest stops, mechanical support, challenging climbs, thrilling descents, killer swag, and new this year, a gravel route option!
Starting and ending in Avon, The Rock Gran Fondo is on the final day of the American Rock Salt Race Series and runs in conjunction with our road race. Fondo riders line up and finish at the same start line as our racers as they embark on four different course options.
Riders can choose from a Piccolo Fondo 25, Medio Fondo 60, Gravel Fondo 60, or Gran Fondo 90 rides with all four course traveling around Conesus Lake and offering stops at Deer Run Winery. Although we provide timed results, all fondos are non-competitive events where riders must follow all the rules of the road as they navigate the course with our well-marked event signs.
Entry for all three events provides riders with custom event sock for riders in the first 100, timed results, on course mechanical support from Cyclepath bike shop, stocked rest stops, and a post-ride meal ticket good for Cheesed and Confused or Tom Wahls food trucks located at the finish line.
The event also offers a team competition where riders can create teams through their local bike shop, cycling club, business, or among a group of friends to win prizes and extra swag.
Team Competition For 2018 we are bringing back our team competition. The rules are simple: sign up for any distance under your team name and earn one point toward your team total. The top three teams with the most points will get awarded after the ride. Only riders who are pre-registered online will count in the team scoring. Day-of riders will not be scored.
The Gran Fondo: 90 miles/6,300 feet - 4 steep climbs Course Map GPX File Our Gran Fondo has offered several different courses over the last four year, but never has the ride been for the faint at heart. With steep punishing climbs, don’t let the ride’s total distance and elevation fool you, as it is surely a challenge for even the toughest riders out there.
For the 2018, we are bringing back the brutal East Ave climb from 2016 while adding a new “warm up” climb on Springwater Road. But don’t worry, the route also keeps the old favorites with the legendary Vista Hill and Mead Hill; these climbs that have been know to force riders to enter “a walk of shame.” Additionally we have added some flat riding early in the route through the historic horse farms of Genesee Valley Hunt Country.
Our four big climbs pack quite a punch as they account for most of the 6300 feet of elevation with grades breaking 20% at times. But for the few who can hack it, these monsters offer spectacular views and thrilling descents and an accomplishment like no other when you return victorious to the finish line where you’ll join riders of all three distances and the racers competing in the day’s road race.
The Gravel Fondo: 60 miles/3,400 feet - 5 gravel sections; one hard paved climb Course Map GPX File New for 2018 we are excited to bring you a gravel fondo through the Genesee Valley with five gravel sections that total just under 15 miles of dirt. This course offers the perfect road/gravel mix for riders of all abilities. For the gravel enthusiast, it's a route that can be ridden hard with friends through rolling terrain on skinny tires with one big paved climb up Springwater Hill. For the gravel newbie, this course offers big breaks between challenging dirt sections, providing a taste of what gravel is all about without the sufferfest of a Mudslinger event.
No matter what your level, this scenic ride includes the historic horse farms of the Genesee Valley Hunt, a section of the Greenway Trail along the might Genesee River, Finger Lakes Wine Country, and Consesus Lake. Disc brakes are an excellent choice as there is one fast dirt descent down Bath Road. For most, a file tread 28 mm tire will do the trick, but a more experienced rider may get away with less and a beginner might want a bit more tread.
The Medio Fondo: 60 miles/2,800 - one hard climb Course Map GPX File Our Medio Fondo is the perfect summer ride with friends. As with all of our routes, this ride also adds some new roads and that are favorites for most locals through the historic horse farms of Genesee Valley Hunt Country. With two stops options at Deer Run Winery and a full run of Conesus Lake, this ride offers one tough climb that takes you to one of the best views of Livingston County has to offer from Stagecoach Road.
The view leads you to a fast, wide open descent down Silker Hill where local riders have been known to hit speeds over 50 mph (not that we would recommend that!) before a flat ride along the lake leads you to rural farm lands and back to our post-race party in at the finish line where you’ll join riders of all three distances and the racers competing in the day’s road race.
The Piccolo Fondo: 25 miles/1,500 feet - no big climbs Course Map GPX File Our Piccolo Fondo is an excellent course for beginners, casual riders, hybrid riders, or experienced riders just looking for a relaxing ride around the countryside.
Filled with low-traffic back roads, this course leads you to Deer Run Winery where you have an opportunity to stop on the way out or on the way back (or both) for refreshments. You then take some gradual climbs up the ridge around Conesus Lake before dropping down to the lake for a scenic waterfront cruise.
The end of the ride takes you through rural farm road before bringing back to the party at the finish line in Avon where you’ll join the riders of all three distances and the racers competing in the day’s road race.
